ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 17 April 2013

Date: 17.04.2013
Time: 12:30

Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll turn first to two judgements for which scheduling orders have been issued since last week’s briefing.

The Trial Chamber Judgement in the case of Jadranko Prlić and others will be rendered on Wednesday, 29 May 2013 at 10am. Jadranko Prlić, Bruno Stojić, Slobodan Praljak, Milivoj Petković, Valentin Ćorić and Berislav Pušić are six former high-level leaders of the Bosnian Croat wartime entity Herceg-Bosna. They are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes including, among others, murder, rape, sexual assault, destruction of property, imprisonment, deportation and forcible transfer committed against Bosnian Muslims and other non-Croats from 1992 to 1994.

The Trial Chamber Judgement in the trial of Vojislav Šešelj has been scheduled for Wednesday, 30 October 2013 at 9am. Vojislav Šešelj, the leader of the Serbian Radical Party, is on trial before the Tribunal for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between 1991 and 1994 against the non-Serb population from large parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Vojvodina, Serbia.

One further scheduling issue, a Status Conference in the case of Nikola Šainović and others will be held on Monday 13 May at 3:30pm in Courtroom III.

This week President Meron issued a decision recognising the sentence remission granted to Goran Jelisić by the Italian Authorities, where he is serving his 40-year sentence. The 1350-day remission was granted due to Jelisić’s participation in a rehabilitation programme. The President's recognition is on a provisional basis, and without prejudice to his full discretion not to count the remission when calculating for other purposes the amount of time served, including the determination of the completion of two-thirds of Jelisić’s sentence.

I’ll turn now to today in the courtrooms. In the trial of Ratko Mladić, a protected witness is currently testifying in closed session. This is the 83rd witness to be called by the Prosecution.

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, an Appeals Hearing has recently concluded in relation to the Prosecution’s appeal of the judgment of acquittal on count 1 of the indictment rendered on 28 June 2012 under Rule 98bis of the Tribunal’s Rules of Procedure and Evidence. Count 1 of the indictment relates to the charge of genocide in certain municipalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Finally, the Outreach Programme is premiering its new documentary ‘Crimes before the ICTY: Prijedor’ in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Sarajevo this week. Through testimonies of survivors and abundant documentary material used in the court proceedings, the documentary features the crimes that occurred in the area of Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and their investigation and prosecution by the Tribunal. Any journalists wishing to attend the premieres, which will take place this afternoon, Thursday and Friday should contact the Media Office for more information.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Aleksandar Kontić, member of the Prosecutor’s Immediate Office, made no statement.

Questions:

A journalist asked whether there would be a premiere of the Prijedor documentary in The Hague. The Spokesperson confirmed that although no official premiere was currently planned, the documentary would be shared with interested parties on request.
