Zoran Žigić in the Custody of Authorities of the Republika Srpska

In recent weeks there have been several media reports that Zoran ZIGIC, who has been publicly indicted by the ICTY, was prepared to surrender himself voluntarily to the Tribunal’s jurisdiction. The accused has been indicted on two occasions by the Tribunal, first in February 1995 for offences allegedly committed in June and July 1992 in the Omarska detention camp and secondly in July 1995 for offences allegedly committed between June and July 1992 in the Keraterm detention camp.

The accused Zigic is currently in the custody of the authorities of Republika Srpska, serving prison sentences for offences unrelated to those for which he has been indicted by the ICTY.

Acting on information that the accused was prepared to surrender voluntarily, today 16 April, Investigators from the Office of the Prosecutor of ICTY, with the support of S-For troops, attended the prison in Banja Luka where the accused was being held and served a copy of the arrest warrants on the relevant authorities of Republika Srpska. The accused was subsequently delivered into the custody of the ICTY Investigators and he was formally arrested pursuant to the Tribunal’s warrants of arrest. Later today the accused was transported to The Hague with the assistance of S-For and is currently being held in the UN Detention Facility awaiting his initial appearance before a Trial Chamber in the coming days.

The Prosecutor wishes to express her gratitude for the assistance provided to her by S-For and the authorities of Republika Srpska in the surrender and transfer of the accused Zigic to The Hague.
