Registry and Chambers

Nenad Golčevski, Acting Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

For those who don’t know me, my name is Nenad Golčevski and I will be taking over the role of Spokesperson from Magdalena Spalinska until a new Spokesperson is appointed. I am also the Outreach Officer here in The Hague and I have worked for the Tribunal for almost two years. As I am from the former Yugoslavia, I am fluent in the local languages and I have an extensive knowledge of the region. Should you wish to contact me, please do so via the Media Office.

I will begin with the latest court activities.

Yesterday, the Appeals Chamber issued its Judgement in the case of Zdravko Tolimir, a former Assistant Commander and Chief of the Sector for Intelligence and Security Affairs of the Main Staff of the Army of the Republika Srpska, accused of crimes committed in the Srebrenica and Žepa enclaves in 1995.

The Appeals Chamber upheld Tolimir’s convictions for genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, extermination, murder, persecutions, and inhumane acts.

The Appeals Chamber confirmed the Trial Chamber’s finding that Tolimir actively participated and significantly contributed to two joint criminal enterprises: one to murder the able-bodied men of Srebrenica and the other to forcibly remove the Bosnian Muslim population from Srebrenica and Žepa. In the summer of 1995, these two joint criminal enterprises resulted in the mass executions of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica and the forcible displacement of thousands of civilians from the Srebrenica and Žepa enclaves.

The Appeals Chamber also upheld Tolimir’s sentence to life imprisonment.

Now turning to the Courtrooms.

In the trial of Ratko Mladić, witness Nebojša Jeremić just completed his testimony. He was a member of the Zvornik Brigade of the Republika Srpska Army during the relevant period. Jeremić was the last witness for this week; he was the 149th witness for the Defence. As a reminder, the case will be adjourned from the 13th to the 17th of April and from the 25th to the 29th of May.

Finally, no hearings will be held next week in the case of Goran Hadžić.
