Princess Astrid of Belgium Visits Tribunal


Her Royal Highness, Princess Astrid of Belgium visited the Tribunal today. The Princess met with the Prosecutor, Serge Brammertz, the President, Judge Fausto Pocar and the Registrar, Hans Holthuis. She also met with Judge Christine Van den Wyngaert and Belgian staff working at the Tribunal.

At the invitation of Prosecutor Brammertz, Princess Astrid came to see the work of the ICTY first hand. During her visit, she was provided with a presentation on the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and the Tribunal’s achievements. She was also given a tour of the courtroom facilities.

The daughter of King Albert II and Queen Paola of Belgium, Princess Astrid was the President of the Belgian Red Cross from 1994 until 2007. In this capacity, the Princess contributed to efforts to strengthen international humanitarian law. The present visit is an expression of her wish to continue doing so.
