The President of the Tribunal, Judge Fausto Pocar and the Prosecutor, Carla del Ponte, warmly welcome the appointment today of Serge Brammertz as the future Prosecutor of the ICTY. The UN Security Council adopted resolution S/2007/683, appointing him for a four-year term with effect from 1 January 2008.


Mr. Brammertz is Belgian and currently Commissioner of the International Independent Investigation Commission. He is the former Deputy Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in charge of the Investigations Division before which he was Federal Prosecutor of the Kingdom of Belgium . Mr. Brammertz also assisted the Council of Europe as an expert mandated with “setting up
a mechanism for evaluating and applying nationally international undertakings concerning the fight against organized crime”. He has also served on many international legal organizations and commissions. Up until 2002, Serge Brammertz was also Scientific Assistant, then Professor of law at the University of Liège . An author on global terrorism, organized crime and corruption, he
has published extensively in European and international academic journals.


Mr. Brammertz will be the fourth Prosecutor to take office at the ICTY, following Carla del Ponte ( Switzerland ), Louise Arbour ( Canada ) and Richard Goldstone ( South Africa ).
