ICTY Donates Books to Legal Training Centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Tribunal this week made a significant donation of legal material to the libraries of the Centres for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The donation includes a large number of copies of the ICTY’s Statute, Judicial Reports and Judgements translated into the local languages. It also includes copies of the European Human Rights LawReview, the Georgetown Law Journal, the Journal of International Justice, the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, the Stanford Law Review as well as other legal manuals and books on legal theory and practice.

Access to the donated books and journals will benefit those undertaking legal training in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as practicing legal professionals. The donation will also considerably strengthen the Centres’ potential to provide educational resources in the field of human rights and war crimes.

Commenting on the book donation, Ana Stojanović from the Training Centre of Republika Srpska said: “We are very grateful to the Tribunal for providing us with judgements translated into the local languages, and the vast array of legal books and journals on war crimes cases. This material will be invaluable to legal practitioners visiting our legal library, and will be of great support to judges and prosecutors in the region when dealing with war crimes cases.”

Almisa Berhamović from the Training Centre of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina said: “The Tribunal’s generous donation will help us provide judges, prosecutors and lawyers in Bosnia with a far greater choice of key legal material on Criminal Law, International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian law.”

As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the local communities’ access to and understanding of the international criminal justice system and the Tribunal’s achievements within it.

The Outreach Programme was created in 1999 with the purpose of improving the understanding of the work of the Tribunal and its relevance in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. As the first programme of its sort, the Tribunal set a precedent for other criminal tribunals which have since set up similar programmes.

The book donation was made possible thanks to the kind support of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe/Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR). The Outreach Programme is generously supported by the European Union.
