Invitation to sexual violence documentary screening

The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme invites journalists to the screening of its first feature-length documentary "Sexual Violence and the Triumph of Justice", which depicts the Tribunal’s historic role in the prosecution of wartime sexual violence.

The screening will take place at the Humanity House in The Hague on Tuesday, 31 January at 16:00 to be followed by a round table discussion and Q&A session. The event is expected to last until 19:00. Journalists wishing to attend should contact the Media Office at press [at] icty.org by Monday, 23 January 17:00.

The documentary features the investigation of sexual crimes in the former Yugoslavia and the Tribunal’s achievements in setting a precedent for the adjudication of these crimes. The documentary includes interviews with former and current senior staff members of the ICTY, as well as testimonies from witnesses and survivors of sexual violence, who bravely gave evidence at trial.

Among the panelists who will be participating in the round table discussion will be Michelle Jarvis, ICTY’s Senior Legal Adviser to the Prosecutor and Senior Appeals Counsel, and Helena Vranov Schoorl, Head of Support Unit of the ICTY’s Victims and Witnesses Section. They will speak about the challenges of prosecuting crimes of sexual violence, securing witness testimonies and providing them with the necessary support.

Available in English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), the documentary will be distributed to victim organisations, local schools, and partner NGOs in the region, with a broadcast on main TV stations planned for 2012. This forms part of the Tribunal’s efforts to raise awareness and understanding of the crimes committed during the conflicts on the former Yugoslavia, and its achievements in punishing those responsible and setting a legal precedent internationally.
