On 4 December 2012, as part of the Outreach Programme’s continuing co-operation with the Criminal Law Department of the Zagreb University Law Faculty, a video-link conference was held at the ICTY Zagreb Office for fourth- and fifth-year law students. A mixed group of 27 Croatian and Erasmus foreign exchange students attended presentations given by ICTY experts on comparative advocacy and the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT). The presentations were given by Paul Rogers, Senior Trial Attorney in the Office of the Prosecutor, and Martin Petrov, Head of the Immediate Office of the Registrar.
Rogers introduced the students to the major differences between common law and civil law, explaining how this affects the proceedings of a hybrid court such as the Tribunal. Petrov spoke about the MICT, which will take over the essential duties of the ICTY and the ICTR following the closure of those two institutions. Both presentations left the students eager to learn more and there were many questions, ranging from the future of the international legal system to the cost of justice.
Professor Maja Munivrana expressed gratitude on behalf of her students and thanked the Outreach Programme staff for their fruitful ongoing co-operation with her faculty. She also voiced her hope that this co-operation will continue even after the closure of the ICTY’s Zagreb Field Office in December 2012.
