Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll turn first to scheduling information issued by the Chamber last week in the case of Goran Hadžić. The Prosecution’s case in this trial will be considered closed first, after the evidence of the last witness has been completed or the Prosecution has used all of its allotted time; or second, when the Chamber has issued its decision on the last evidence-related motion, whichever of the two options occurs later The Prosecution currently estimates it will call its last witness by mid-September of this year. The Chamber also set out that the Defence case will begin four months after the close of the OTP case, if there are no submissions for acquittal under Rule 98bis of the Tribunal’s Rules of Procedure and Evidence, or 4 months after a possible Rule 98bis judgement, unless such a  judgement results in a full acquittal.

Hearings in the trials of Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić continue this week as scheduled. Proceedings in the case of Goran Hadžić which adjourned last Thursday will resume after the summer recess, on Monday, 19 August at 9:00 in Courtroom II.

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Dušan Dunjić, a forensic medicine expert. He is the 169th witness to be called by the Defence.  Hearings in the case will continue next week Monday to Thursday during the first four days of the summer recess and will then resume on Tuesday 27 August at 9:00 in Courtroom I.

In the Mladić case, William Haglund, a forensic anthropologist, is currently testifying. He is the 129th witness to be called by the Prosecution.

The ICTY’s three week summer recess begins next Monday 29 July, with courtroom proceedings resuming on Monday 19 August with the trials of Ratko Mladić and Goran Hadžić. ICTY Weekly Press Briefings will also resume after recess. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all an excellent summer break.
