Young Kosovars introduced to the ICTY

Pristina, 9 October 2013

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights Kosovo (YIHR KS) in partnership with the ICTY’s Outreach Programme today gave a presentation on the work and achievements of the Tribunal to students at the Gjin Gazulli high school in Pristina.

YIHR KS staff initially gave the 45 students a short history of the ICTY, including how and why it was established, what its mandate is, and how many people have been indicted and convicted. The focus then turned to cases with elements specifically relating to Kosovo, such as those of Slobodan Milošević, Vlastimir Đorđević, Haradinaj et al. and Limaj et al. The students were also shown footage from three testimonies given by witnesses who have appeared before the Tribunal. The final part of the presentation looked at the contributions the ICTY has made to international criminal law and reconciliation in the region.

At the conclusion of the presentation, the pupils were asked if they had heard much about the Tribunal before today, and most said they had not, but that they would now be interested to learn more. The presenters explained that it was easy to find information on the work of the Tribunal through its website and various social media channels.

The school’s deputy principal concluded the event by thanking the presenters and stressing the importance of such initiatives for raising awareness among the younger generation of the recent history of their region.
