Another successful high school presentation

Peja/Peć, 21 October 2013

Around 35 students from the Ali Hadri Gymnasium in Peja/Peć today gathered to listen to Youth Initiative for Human Rights Kosovo representatives talk about the work and achievements of the Tribunal, in an event organised in cooperation with the ICTY’s Outreach Programme.

Peja/Peć suffered heavily during 1999’s Kosovo War, and the students were therefore naturally interested to hear about cases which included elements specific to their region, particularly that of former Kosovo Liberation Army fighters Ramush Haradinaj, Idriz Balaj and Lahi Brahimaj. The presenters explained the reasons for the partial retrial that had been ordered in that case, using it as a springboard for a discussion about the importance of witness protection.

Although most focused on trials involving alleged crimes in Kosovo, the students had also heard on TV about the case of former leader of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadžić and were glad to get the chance to learn more about wartime events from across the rest of the former Yugosalvia.

As the event concluded, the students were full of positive comments about the presentation, and the school’s deputy principal also offered a few words on the importance of such initiatives for raising awareness among the younger generation of a topic not always covered in their national curriculums.
