Journalists from the Balkans visit the ICTY

The Hague, 4 June 2014

The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme today welcomed a group of nine journalists from Kosovo, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania. The visitors met with representatives of the Outreach, the Media Office and the Office of the Prosecutor.

Outreach officer Nenad Golčevski introduced the group to the work and achievements of the ICTY. This was followed by a question and answer session with the ICTY’s spokesperson, Magdalena Spalinska, and the Chief of the Operations of the Office of the Prosecutor, Bob Reid.

The visit was organised by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For me, as a journalist, this was a very useful visit. I learned how to find information about ICTY cases and I also had the opportunity to meet ICTY staff working in the Tribunal’s Media Office, so now it will be easier for me to get to the source of information. On a more personal level, I hope that people brought to justice by this court will be a reminder for us living in the region not to repeat the same mistakes.

The visit to the ICTY was really impressive for me. I learned a lot, and I wish that more journalists from the Balkans would visit the ICTY. Biased reporting about the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia is still very much present in the region and I believe that journalists from the Balkans could do more to change that. A visit to the Tribunal could help them to become better equipped for that.
