ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 10 September 2014

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll move directly to some updates on the forthcoming courtroom schedule.

A Status Conference in the case of Jadranko Prlić and others will take place on 23 September at 15:30 in Courtroom I.

In the case of Ratko Mladić, there will be no trial proceedings during the week commencing Monday 6 October.

Staying with the trial of Ratko Mladić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Vladimir Lukić, former Prime Minister of Republika Srpska.

In the case of Goran Hadžić, Vojislav Šešelj is the current defence witness in the case.

This week, the Mechanism’s Prosecutor Hassan B. Jallow is paying an official visit to the Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia. This is the Prosecutor’s first official visit to the region in his capacity as Prosecutor of the MICT, which is gradually taking over the functions of the ICTY as the Tribunal completes its remaining cases. In all three states, Prosecutor Jallow is holding meetings at the ministries of foreign affairs and ministries of justice, and is also signing Memoranda of Understanding with relevant prosecutorial bodies that will formalize working relationships between the MICT and national prosecutors. Additionally in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prosecutor Jallow will visit the memorial site in Srebrenica today, and Bradina and Grabovica tomorrow.

Next week, the Outreach Programme’s Youth Project will kick off the new academic year with a lecture at the Dr Simo Milošević Institute in Igalo, Montenegro on 16 September. The lecture, on the topic of Milestones in the jurisprudence of the ICTY, will be delivered as part of the Straniak Academy for Democracy and Human Rights. Participating students are drawn from across the region of the former Yugoslavia.

Questions:

Asked if there is any news on the Šešelj, especially regarding the time when the newly appointed Judge finished familiarizing himself with the case record, Spalinska responded that the judge is still familiarizing himself with the case and that there was no indication when this process will be completed. Spalinska added that the judgement would be delivered in due course.
