Lively debate following the ICTY presentation

Mališevo/Malishevë, 19 November 2014

Astrit Lleshi, ICTY representative met today with 28 students and teachers of the ‘Abdyl Frasheri’ high school in Mališevo/Malishevë, Kosovo and discussed with them the work and accomplishments of the ICTY.

Students and teachers actively participated in the presentation and were particularly interested to learn more about the trial of Fatmir Limaj, as he is native of Mališevo/Malishevë. Astrit informed them that Limaj was tried together with Isak Muslui and Haradin Bala and briefly talked about this case. He explained that Limaj and Musliu were acquitted, while Bala was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for crimes he committed as a guard at the KLA Lapušnik/Llapushnik prison camp. He also introduced students to other ICTY cases related to Kosovo, such as those of Slobodan Milošević, Vlastimir Đorđević and Haradinaj et al. The students were also shown footage from several trial sessions, including witness testimonies and delivery of a judgment. The final part of the presentation focused on the contributions the ICTY has made to international criminal law and transitional justice in the region.

Before departing, Astrit distributed to the students a variety of handouts with information about the ICTY and encouraged the young audience to explore for themselves the Tribunal’s website and social media channels.
