Good afternoon,
Today, the Appeals Chamber will render its judgement in the case against Milan Martić at 14:00 pm in courtroom I. Martić, a former war-time political leader of Croatian Serbs, is one of the most senior persons tried by the Tribunal. The Trial Chamber sentenced him to 35 years’ imprisonment for persecutions, murder, torture, deportation and other crimes against humanity and violations of laws and customs of war committed during the early nineties against Croats and other non-Serbs in Croatia. A separate press release and summary of the judgement will be issued immediately after the hearing.
Turning to the court schedule:
The trials of Popović and others, Momčilo Perišić, Lukić and Lukić, Gotovina and others and Šešelj will continue this week.
Next week a status conference in the Mrkšić & Šljivančanin has been scheduled for Thursday, 16 October at 15:00 pm in courtroom III. The case is pending before the Appeals Chamber. On 27 September 2007 the trial chamber sentenced Mile Mrkšić to 20 and Veselin Šljivančanin to five years’ imprisonment for their role in the crimes at Ovčara. Both parties appealed the sentence. The third accused, former JNA captain Miroslav Radić, was acquitted of all charges.
A status conference has been scheduled for Friday, 17 October at 10:00 am in Courtroom II in the case of Vlastimir Đorđević. The former Assistant Minister of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs and its Public Security Department Chief is accused of taking part in a widespread campaign of terror and violence directed at ethnic Albanian civilians in Kosovo in 1999. A date for the start of the trial has not been scheduled.
