Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good morning,

The President of the Tribunal, Judge Fausto Pocar, will be in New York next Tuesday where he will meet the Security Council’s working group on ad-hoc Tribunals. Issues to be discussed include the temporary increase of ad litem judges necessary to speed up the completion strategy as well as residual mechanisms to be put in place after the completion of our mission.

And in the Tribunal’s courtrooms this week: Opening statements were made by the defence council of Ljube Boskoski today with the first witness due to take the stand tomorrow. Johan Tarculovski’s defence will make its opening statement at a later stage. Fifty Prosecution witnesses were heard before the Trial Chamber in just over 100 trial days in this case.

A Trial Chamber decision issued earlier this week in the Prlic and others case moved the start of the defence case to 5 May 2008. As you know, 98bis hearings are ongoing in this case and are due to continue next week.

The trials of Vojislav Seselj, Milutinovic and others and Popovic and others will continue this and next week.

A status conference will take place this Friday in the case of Pavle Strugar. A decision issued by the Appeals Chamber earlier this week scheduled the appeals hearing to take place on 23 April this year. The former JNA commander was convicted for the crimes committed during the military campaign in Dubrovnik area and sentenced to 8 years’ imprisonment.
