ICTY Weekly Press Briefing

Date: 20.02.2008

Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good morning,

Before turning to immediate trial issues I wanted to use this opportunity to say a few words about the Tribunal’s Detention Unit. Specifically, I wanted to underline the high standards of the unit and respond to some recent unfounded claims printed in the Serb media. Some agencies there asserted, among other things, that the accused Jovica Stanišić would not receive appropriate treatment during his custody in the unit. I would like to make it clear that he, like all other detainees, will be afforded the best possible medical assistance and healthcare.

The Tribunal’s Detention Unit operates in accordance to the highest international standards, and is recognised as maintaining excellent conditions by external international inspecting agencies. The Detention Unit will continue to defend the dignity and protect the rights of all individuals detained.

This morning, the trial chamber in the Prlić et al case rendered its oral decision on the rule 98bis hearing. The Trial Chamber dismissed all motions for acquittal. Yesterday, the Trial Chamber ordered the temporary provisional release for five of the six accused for a set period prior to the 5 May 2008 scheduled commencement of the defence case. A press release will be issued later today.

Moving on to scheduling orders:

Two Rule 98bis oral decisions have been scheduled for next week, one on Tuesday 26 February at 14:15 in courtroom II for Delić and the other one on Wednesday 27 February at 9:00 in courtroom I for Popović et al.

This Friday afternoon, there will be a status conference in the case of Vlastimir Đorđević in courtroom III at 14:30.

As regards Šešelj, Boškoski and Tarčulovski, as well as Milutinović et al., trials continue as scheduled.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made no statement.

Questions:

Asked whether there was any information on the Prosecutor’s planned visits to the region, Kavran responded that the present intention was for them to commence towards the end of next week. She was not able to give any further details.
