Date:  18.06.2008
Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

Next Tuesday sees the start of the Baton Haxhiu trial which is scheduled to sit for two days. You will remember that Baton Haxhiu, a journalist from Kosoxo, was charged with contempt of court for revealing the identity of a protected witness in the Haradinaj et al case.

As regards this week's courtroom schedule: Hearings in the Vojislav Šešelj, Prlić et al. and Popović et al. trials continue to sit this week.

Two status conferences are scheduled for the second half of this week with Mrkšić et al. taking place before the Appeals chamber on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and Vlastimir Đorđević will be before Trial Chamber on Friday morning 10:00am.

As you know last week the closing arguments were held in the trial of former Bosnian Army Commander Rasim Delić. Initially, both Prosecution and Defence final trial briefs were filed confidentially. On Friday public versions of the briefs were filed in which the prosecution recommends a sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and the defence requested an acquittal.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made the following statement:

This week, the Office of the Prosecutor is hosting colleagues from Serbia working on war crimes cases. Members of the War Crimes Investigation Service of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior as well as staff of the War Crimes Prosecutors Office in Belgrade are here at the Tribunal on a 3-day working visit, sponsored by the OSCE in Serbia.

This visit is part of the OTP’s continuing efforts to enhance and promote cooperation with the regional prosecutors and others involved in handling war crimes cases and to reinforce professional ties with our colleagues in the region.

Questions:

A journalist pointed out that the Office of War Crimes in Belgrade stated that Župljanin would be in The Hague before the end of the week. Asked for a confirmation, Kavran said there was no official confirmation of the exact arrival. It was understood that the local legal proceedings were more or less exhausted so he is expected soon, Kavran added.
