Weekly Press Briefing

Date: 26.11.2003

Time: 12.20 p.m.

REGISTRY
AND CHAMBERS:

Jim
Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following opening statement:

Good
afternoon,

First, the initial appearance
for Milan Babic will be held this afternoon at 3 p.m. in Courtroom I before
Trial Chamber I.

The first meeting of
the Implementation Task Force (ITF) for the establishment and operation of the
Special War Crimes Chamber of the Court of BiH will be held in Sarajevo next
week, from Monday 1 December to 3 December. The ITF is composed of several working
groups dealing with specific issues such as witness protection, trial management
and investigations. These groups, composed of representatives from the Office
of the High Representative (OHR), the BiH Government, the ICTY, the OSCE and
others, are scheduled to meet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Friday, there
will be meeting of the Joint Executive Board to review the progress made by
the working groups. The Joint Executive Board is co-chaired by the BiH Ministry
of Justice and the OHR. President Meron will be attending on behalf of the ICTY.

Meanwhile, next week
on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in The Hague, the Tribunal will be hosting
the first in a series of conferences for the purpose of assisting the ICTY and
specifically its Victims and Witnesses Section (VWS) to help build referral
networks of health and welfare professionals who will provide preparation and
follow-up services to meet the health needs of witnesses in the former Yugoslavia.
The participants in the conference will be psychiatrists, medical doctors, psychologists
and social workers from the areas where most of our witnesses reside. The VWS
is using the conference to teach the participants more about the ICTY, and it
is hoping they will agree to develop protocols on how ICTY witnesses can access
their services. There will be three further conferences for Croatia, Serbia
and Montenegro and Kosovo.
