ICTY Judges to Hold Peer-To-Peer Meeting with Colleagues from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Judges from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will hold a peer-to-peer meeting today in Sarajevo with colleagues from Bosnia and Herzegovina to discuss experiences in adjudicating war crimes cases.

This is the first such meeting organised in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the European Union-funded War Crimes Justice Project, a joint initiative of the ICTY, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and OSCE field operations in the region.

The project is aimed at enhancing the capacity of legal professionals in the region to handle complex war crimes cases and forms part of the ICTY’s ongoing efforts to ensure the positive and lasting impact of its legacy across the region of the former Yugoslavia.

Around 30 judges from all court tiers in Bosnia and Herzegovina will participate in the meeting, together with Judge Fausto Pocar and Judge Bakone Justice Moloto from the ICTY. The judges will discuss practices in the areas of disclosure of exculpatory and other relevant material, command responsibility, application of substantive law and working with vulnerable witnesses.

The War Crimes Justice Project is a 4-million euro regional project funded by the European Union and carried out by ODIHR in partnership with the ICTY, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and OSCE field operations.
