War Crimes Justice Project Closing Event to be held on Wednesday, 26 October, in Sarajevo

The War Crimes Justice Project will come to a close on Wednesday, 26 October, in Sarajevo, where representatives from judiciaries across the region will meet with the Project partners to celebrate the Project’s achievements.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the closing event which will start at 9:00 and the subsequent press conference which will be held at 10:00 at Hotel Europa, Sarajevo, Vladislava Skarića Street, No. 5 . The speakers at the press conference will be Ambassador Janez Lenarčić, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Judge Fausto Pocar, ICTY Judge Meddžida Kreso, President of the BiH Court and Dr. Renzo Daviddi, Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The War Crimes Justice Project, a four-million Euro project funded by the EU and co-ordinated by the OSCE/ODIHR in partnership with the ICTY and UNICRI was launched in May 2010 in order to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and materials from the ICTY to legal professionals in the former Yugoslavia, not only by translating much of the Tribunal's materials into the region's local languages, but also by enabling the exchange of knowledge and expertise between ICTY officials and national legal professionals.

As part of the closing event, Judge Fausto Pocar, Judge Liu Daqun, Judge Frederick Harhoff and Judge Árpád Prandler will hold a final peer-to-peer meeting with judges from national judiciaries  to share experiences in adjudicating war crimes cases.

Commenting on the Project, Judge Faustor Pocar said: “The WCJP has provided a unique opportunity for ICTY judges and legal staff to share their experiences with their local counterparts, ensuring that the lessons learned by the Tribunal are passed on effectively to current and future generations of legal professionals across the region.”

The efforts of the Tribunal brought about the successful production of 60,000 pages of transcripts of Tribunal hearings in local languages and the translation of the ICTY's Appeals Chamber Case Law Research Tool (ACCLRT). The project also featured a strong hands-on aspect, providing training to local legal professionals in protecting witnesses, using the ICTY Court Records database and filing requests for ICTY assistance, as well as organising peer-to-peer meetings between ICTY officials and national legal professionals.
