Registry and Chambers:

Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

The Appeals Chamber will render its judgement in the case of Mile Mrkšić and Veselin Šljivančanin on 5 May 2009 at 14:15 in courtroom I. Mrkšić and Šljivančanin, both former senior officers of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA), were convicted in 2007 for their roles in the Ovčara executions in 1991 and sentenced by the Trial Chamber to 20 years’ imprisonment and five years’ imprisonment respectively.

Mrkšić was found guilty of aiding and abetting the murder, torture and cruel treatment of 194 non-Serb prisoners of war who were taken from Vukovar Hospital following the fall of this Croatian city to JNA and Serb paramilitary forces in November 1991. Šljivančanin was convicted of aiding and abetting the torture of the prisoners.

Šljivančanin is currently on provisional release and has been ordered to return into Tribunal’s custody by 5 May 2009.

The trials for Prlić and others will recommence on Monday, 20 April at 14:15 in courtroom I. The trials for Lukić and Lukić, Momčilo Perišić and Vlastimir Đorđević are scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, 21 April at 9:00 in courtrooms I and III.

Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made the following statement:

At the invitation of the Mr. Miroslav Lajcak, the Foreign Minister of the Slovak Republic, Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will be in Bratislava on a working visit tomorrow and Friday where he will meet with Government officials.

The topics of the meetings will be the work of the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICTY, the Tribunal's Completion Strategy as well as the cooperation of states with the Office of the Prosecutor.
