Co-operation between Bosnia and the International Tribunal formally acknowledged

Today, Saturday 3 December 1994, a memorandum of understanding was signed at the premises of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) between Mr. Ifran Ljubijankic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Justice Richard Goldstone, the Prosecutor of the Tribunal.

This document officially acknowledges the Bosnian government’s commitment  to co-operate fully with the Tribunal, and in particular to comply with requests from the Prosecutor.

Formalising in written form the Bosnian government’s co-operative position which was conveyed to Justice Goldstone during his meeting in Sarajevo on 5 and 6 October 1994, the memorandum of understanding provides mainly for the:

-    setting-up of a Tribunal’s sub-office in Sarajevo,
-    facilitating of on-site investigations, and seizing of physical evidence,
-    meeting with potential witnesses: location, identification, interview, protection,
-    sending of observers to the trials to be held in Bosnia,
-    exchange of information of all kinds.
