Weekly Press Briefing - 24 March 2010

Date:  24.3.2010
Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Christian Chartier, Acting Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

On Friday, the Security Council adopted a resolution allowing the total number of ad litem judges to temporarily exceed the maximum of 12, as allowed under Article 12 of the Tribunal’s Statute, to a maximum of 13. This is to enable Judges Prost and Stole to complete the Popović et al. case. The total number of ad litem judges should return to 12 by 30 June, or upon the completion of the Popović et al. case if sooner. The full text of Resolution 1915 is available on the Security Council’s website.

Onto the courtroom schedule:

The trial of Vojislav Šešelj is expected to continue on Tuesday at 14:15 in Courtroom I with the testimony of one of the four remaining Trial Chamber witnesses.

In the case of Gotovina and others, the third of the expected seven Chamber witnesses has been testifying since last Friday and it is expected that his testimony will continue for two more days.

Proceedings in the trials of Prlić et al., Momčilo Perišić, Zdravko Tolimir, Vlastimir Ðorđević as well as Mićo Stanišić and Stojan Župljanin continue this week and next as scheduled.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made the following statement:

Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will be in Brussels tomorrow where he will meet with Mr. Stefan Fuele, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement.

This meeting is the continuation of Prosecutor's regular working meetings with representatives of the European Union. Prosecutor Brammertz and Mr. Fuele will discuss issues relevant to the work of the Office of the Prosecutor, the Tribunal's completion strategy and the cooperation of states.

Questions:

Asked when the trial of Karadžić case will resume, Christian Chartier responded that the proceedings were suspended pending a decision of the Appeals Chamber on the Acccused’s appeal of the decision on the commencement of evidence. The trial will not resume until the decision has been made.

Asked whether the Security Council’s resolution meant that the judgement in the case of Popović et al. has been postponed, Christian Chartier responded that there is no delay in the rendering of the judgement as no date has ever been set. The resolution implies that the judgement can be expected to be rendered before the end of the spring.
