Students react well to ‘refreshing’ and ‘innovative’ presentation

Tuzla, 14 June 2012

Almir Alić, Outreach officer in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), today gave an interactive presentation on wartime sexual violence and the Tribunal’s jurisprudence to a group of 50 students from the ‘Meša Selimović’ gymnasium in the north-eastern town of Tuzla.

During the two-hour presentation, students were introduced to the Tribunal’s work on and jurisprudence relating to war crimes, rape as a war crime, superior responsibility, joint criminal enterprise, mitigating and aggravating circumstances, and sentencing. Almir took the opportunity to engage the students in a wide-ranging discussion on war crimes and accountability, and encouraged his young audience to take an active part in the debate.

One of the teachers in attendance, Emina Vukovljak, said she had been very impressed by the presentation. "This is a very innovative approach compared to the regular curriculum. The students’ attention was maintained throughout the presentation, due to the fact that they had an active role in the class, which was quite refreshing compared to a standard lecture format," Ms Vukovljak said.
