Impressive presentation leads to request for repeat performances

Bijeljina, 1 June 2012

A group of 20 high school students, attending the ‘Human Rights School for Youth’ in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), today met with Outreach representative Almir Alić to learn about the transitional justice role of the ICTY.

The ‘Human Rights School’ is a seven-day event, organised by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Republika Srpska (HCHR RS), which has gathered together young people from different ethnic communities in BiH, specifically from the towns of Tuzla, Doboj, Visoko and Bijeljina.

The students showed a great deal of interest in the topic, asking questions both during and after the presentation. Issues discussed included the detention conditions of the accused, false testimony, witness protection measures, defence financing for indigent accused, and the rendering of judgements. The students were also very keen to discuss the purposes of punishment, including retribution and deterrence, and how the individualisation of guilt contributes to reconciliation.

Following the presentation, the co-ordinator of the HCHR RS in Bijeljina commended the event and invited Almir to return and deliver the same talk to other youth group members.

Three students from the Bijeljina University law faculty, who also attended today’s lecture, extended a similar invitation to Almir, asking that he visit their institution and present the Tribunal’s work and achievements.
