High school presentation project visits Travnik

Travnik, 26 April 2012

Thirty gymnasium students from the central Bosnian town of Travnik responded very positively to the presentation on the work of the ICTY given at their school by Outreach representative Almir Alić.

The school counsellor also applauded the job done by Alić, and stressed how young people’s views could be shaped by such presentations. She further suggested that their integration into the curriculum would be extremely useful, if only the country’s politicians would allow it.

Travnik municipality was the scene of heavy fighting between the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Croatian Defence Council. War crimes committed by both sides were adjudicated in a number of ICTY cases, including those of Tihomir Blaškić and Rasim Delić.

The students were keen to discuss the cases related to their local area, and were particularly interested in hearing about the level of acceptance the high school project had met with elsewhere in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Such presentations are important because of the level of ignorance of the issues that were discussed here today and the crimes committed in my community,” said one student.
