Over 100 Novi Sad students learn about the Tribunal

Novi Sad, 14 May 2012

The first in a series of Outreach lectures in Vojvodina, Serbia, took place at the Gymnasium Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj in the city of Novi Sad today in front of 130 students who were joined by teachers, the school principal and a representative from the Provincial Secretariat for Education.

A number of students praised elements of the presentations saying that this was the first time they had learned about the prosecution of wartime sexual violence, a topic on which they would like to know more.

The audience was most interested in hearing about the cases of Vojislav Šešelj, the leader of the Serbian Radical Party and of Ramush Haradinaj and others, the former Kosovo Liberation Army members.

The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme in Serbia will visit several other high schools in Vojvodina before the end of the current academic year in order to present the work of the Tribunal and its achievements in bringing to justice those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s.

It is hoped that permission will be secured from the Ministry of Education of Serbia to extend the programme to other schools in the country in the next academic year.
