ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 6 November 2013

Date: 6.11.2013
Time: 12:30

Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

I will turn directly to the latest developments in some of our ongoing cases.

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, the Chamber has granted the Accused’s motion to add two new witnesses who will testify about events in Srebrenica and to withdraw 98 other municipalities-related witnesses from the current witness list.  Karadžić has until 11 November 2013 to implement these changes to his list of witnesses.

Also in the Karadžić case, on Monday, the Accused submitted a request to Mechanism President Theodor Meron to issue an order to appoint a single judge to consider whether or not to appoint an amicus curiae Prosecutor to investigate possible contempt by former ICTY Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. The request is based on a Wikileaks cable from April 2004, which the Accused suggests indicates that Del Ponte disclosed confidential information to US officials relating to the Slobodan Milošević case.

The same motion was filed before the ICTY President Meron on 27 September, who went on to appoint a Special Chamber to deal with it. On 18 October 2013, the Special Chamber decided that the Mechanism would have the jurisdiction over the matter, following which the accused filed this new request before the MICT.

Now on to the courtrooms, there are no hearings today in the case of Ratko Mladić.  However, the trial will resume tomorrow morning with the continued testimony of expert witness Richard Higgs testifying about the use of mortars during the war in Sarajevo. He is the 156th witness called by the Prosecution.

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, witness Vujadin Popović, former Republika Srpska Army officer, is giving testimony today about the events in Srebrenica in July 1995. This is the 179th witness in the Defense case.

Both trials will continue this week and next as scheduled.

And finally, next Wednesday, 13 November 2013, a Status Conference is scheduled to be held in the Đordević case at 3 p.m. in courtroom II.
