High school students impressed by Outreach presentation

Kosovska Mitrovica/ Mitrovica, 6 November 2014

ICTY representative, Driton Gashi, today gave a presentation about the Tribunal, its work and achievements, for 37 students of the High School ‘’Frang Bardhi’’ in Kosovska Mitrovica/Mitrovica, Kosovo. The students had a chance to learn about the establishment and mandate of the Tribunal, some of the key trials held before it, the contribution that the ICTY has made to international justice and the role of the Outreach Programme in bringing the Tribunal’s work closer to the communities of the former Yugoslavia.

Following Driton’s presentation, the students wanted to hear more about the ICTY’s Kosovo-related trials, such as the Slobodan Milošević, Đorđević, Šainović et al, Limaj et al and Haradinaj et al cases. Other questions focused on ongoing and possible future cases within the local judicial system, as well as whether the ICTY will initiate new trials related to Kosovo. Driton explained that the ICTY is an ad hoc court, that its work will be completed in the next couple of years, and that therefore there is no possibility for the Tribunal to open new cases.

The majority of students evaluated the presentation highly, saying that it was both very informative and interesting.
