The President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia calls for a sports boycott.

The President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Judge Antonio Cassese, will later today invite the international community to take more robust action to isolate and to bring to justice as soon as possible, in any case "before the elections", some indicted leaders, such as Radovan Karadzic, Dario Kordic, Milan Martic and Ratko Mladic. To this end, President Cassese will propose considering the imposition on the responsible Parties of "some selective economic sanctions and (...) a sports boycott".

On the eve of the Olympic Games at Atlanta, this move would aim at compelling the Parties to Dayton to arrest and to turn over to the ICTY the 49 accused who are still at large.

Addressing at the end of the day the Mid-Term Conference on the Implementation of the Dayton Agreement convened in Florence, President Cassese will state that "the co-operation of the Parties with the International Tribunal is (...) far from satisfactory". He will urge all States and International Organisations not to accept this "gloomy state of affairs" and "to take more vigorous action" based on "moral leadership".

The full text of President Cassese's statement will be made available upon request.
