Mucic case - IT-96-21-T/update 1 : Robert Rhodes appointed as Mucic's defence lawyer.

At the defendant's request, the Registrar of the Tribunal has appointed Mr. Robert RHODES, Queen's Counsel, to represent Zdravko MUCIC, one of the four accused in the first indictment dealing with Bosnian Serb victims (issued on 22 March 1996).

Background

Mr. RHODES was called to the bar in 1968 and was appointed a QC in 1989. His work is overwhelmingly defence-related, although he worked as a prosecution counsel for the Inland Revenue while a Junior. He also works as a Crown Court Recorder (a part-time Crown Court Judge).

Mr. RHODES specialises in commercial fraud and white-collar crime cases. While he has no direct experience in International Humanitarian Law or human rights cases, he has extensive administrative and criminal law experience, including drugs-related and murder cases.

Mr. RHODES applied to be considered for the Tribunal's list of defence counsel because he believes that "it is precisely people who are accused of such awful crimes who need the best representation". He considers it "a great honour to be here", and adds that he has "no doubt that the Tribunal will be scrupulously impartial and will administer justice fairly".

The 50-year-old Mr. RHODES was born in London, where he studied law at London's Inner Temple between 1966 and 1968.

He is a member of various associations, including English Bar Associations, the International Bar Association, and the human rights group, Justice.
