27th Plenary of the ICTY Judges
On Thursday 12 December 2002, the Judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia held their 27th Plenary Session, as provided by the Statute.
The President, Judge Claude Jorda, presented an oral report on the progress of the strategy of deferring ICTY cases to the legal bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This report followed the President’s address to the Security Council in November and his meeting, earlier this month, with the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lord Ashdown.
The Registrar also addressed the Plenary and updated the Judges on a number of managerial issues.
As usual during the statutory Plenary of December, the Judges then discussed amendments to the Rules of Procedure and Evidence as prepared and proposed by the Rules Committee, under the chairmanship of Judge Richard May. They adopted a number of amendments with regard to, among others, the possibility of holding status conferences through video-links, the confidentiality of the identity of witnesses and the continuation of a trial when one of the three Judges is unavailable.
The final text of the amended and new Rules will be made public as soon as they are finalised.
