Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll start with an update on the trial of Ratko Mladić, following the Pre-Defence Conference that took place this Monday. Presiding Judge Alphons Orie confirmed that the Defence has been granted 207.5 hours to present its case, mirroring the number of hours granted to the Office of the Prosecutor. The Chamber has not set a limit on the number of witnesses the Defence may call. The Chamber directed the Defence to file its new consolidated witness list and list of exhibits by 16 May. It was confirmed that the Defence will begin with its first witness on 19 May.

In the Prlić and others case, the Appeals Chamber granted the Registrar's Application pursuant to Rule 45(E) of the Tribunals’ Rules ordering Slobodan Praljak to reimburse the Tribunal the amount of over EUR 2,807,000 for the cost sustained in providing him legal aid.

The Chamber ruled that the amount needs to be paid to the Registrar within 90 days of the date of the notification. However, if he wishes, Praljak is allowed to repay the total amount in monthly installments over a three-year period.

Now onto the courtroom schedule, as mentioned earlier, the Defence will begin its case for Ratko Mladić on Monday, 19 May at 9:30 a.m. in courtroom I. Journalists wishing to attend that hearing are reminded to send an email to the ICTY Media Office. Hearings will then continue for the remainder of the week from 9:30 a.m. till 14:15 in courtroom I.

In the Zdravko Tolimir case, a status conference has been scheduled for Tuesday, 24 June at 3:15 p.m. in courtroom I.

In the Popović and others case, the French translation of the Trial Chamber judgement is now available on the Tribunal’s website.
