DEATH OF JUDGE LAÏTY KAMA, ICTR

It is with great sadness that the Prosecutor, who is presently in the United States of America, heard of the death yesterday of Judge Laïty Kama.

Judge Kama, who was the first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, died on Sunday 6 May 2001 in the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after a short illness.

Until then, Judge Kama had been actively presiding over trials before the Tribunal in Arusha. His presence in the ICTR and in the field of international criminal justice will be sorely missed.

The Prosecutor and all her staff wish to extend their deepest condolences to Judge Kama’s family.
