Martin Petrov, Chief of the Office of the Registrar, made the following statement:
Good afternoon,
I’ll turn straight to courtroom proceedings.
In the case of Mićo Stanišić and Stojan Župljanin, this week the Chamber continued to hear the first witness called by Stanišić’s Defence team, Andrija Bjelosević. Bjelosević was Chief of Police in Doboj during the indictment period.
In the trial of Zdravko Tolimir, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Milenko Todorović, who was Assistant Commander for security and intelligence in the East Bosnian Corps of the Republika Srpska Army. He is the 100th witness to be called by the Prosecution.
The Tribunal will be in recess from this Friday to Monday, 25 April for Easter. The trial of Zdravko Tolimir will continue next week, with hearings resuming on Tuesday 26 April at 14:15 in Courtroom III. Hearings in the Stanišić and Župljanin trial will resume on Monday, 2 May at 9:00 am in Courtroom I.
To conclude, I would like to update you on the latest Outreach activities:
On Monday, the Tribunal’s Outreach Programme welcomed a visit of law students from Nova Gorica University in Slovenia. The students met with representatives from all three organs of the Tribunal and took part in discussions on a variety of issues including the gathering of evidence and cooperation with States, and the applicable law of the Tribunal.
The Outreach Programme is pleased to announce the publication of the BCS translation of the compilation of presentations and discussions that took place during the Conference ‘Assessing the Legacy of the ICTY’. This conference was held in The Hague in February 2010 and provided a platform for the Tribunal and relevant stakeholders to share their respective views of the Tribunal’s legal and institutional legacies. The publication is edited by Richard H Steinberg of the University of California. Copies will be distributed widely throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.
Office of the Prosecutor:
Frederick Swinnen, special adviser to the Prosecutor, made the following statement:
In preparation of the next report to the UN Security Council, Mr. Serge Brammertz, the Prosecutor, will travel to Zagreb on 4 May and to Belgrade on 10-11 May. During these working visits, he will meet with the authorities to discuss the cooperation with the Office of the Prosecutor. Shortly thereafter, he will submit his report to the UN Security Council. He will address the Council early June.
Questions:
Asked whether a date had been confirmed for the submission of the Prosecutor’s report to the UN Security Council, Frederick Swinnen responded that the provisional date is 6 June. This will be confirmed in due course.
Asked whether there would be media opportunities during the Prosecutor’s visit to the region, Swinnen responded that it was unlikely to be the case in Zagreb, given the tight schedule of the visit. Regarding Belgrade, information on any possible media opportunities will be communicated to the press a few days prior to the visit, once the programme has been finalised.
