REGISTRY AND
CHAMBERS
Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
The Registrar
of the Tribunal, Mr. Hans Holthuis, will pay his first visit to the UN Headquarters
in New York this week since taking up his responsibilities as Registrar. He
will attend a meeting of the United Nations’ General Assembly’s budget committee
on Friday, where the budget for the ad litem judges will be the focus
of discussion.
The nominations
for candidates for the election of the permanent judges here at the Tribunal
are expected to be passed by the Security Council to the General Assembly in
New York at the end of this week or by the beginning of next week, and soon
after that we should be officially notified of the date on which the election
will be held. We will of course keep you posted on that matter.
In terms of court
proceedings, a reminder that there will be a status conference in the Kvocka
and others case at 4 p.m. this afternoon in courtroom III.
Tomorrow, there
will be a status conference in the Simic and others case at 10 a.m. in courtroom
I, and a status conference in the Sikirica and others case at 2 p.m. also in
courtroom I.
With regard to
legal filings:
On 1 February,
the Acting Deputy Registrar, David Tolbert, on behalf of the Registrar, issued
a decision to assign Ms. Jasminka Jovisevic to be defence counsel for Biljana
Plavsic following a request from Plavsic to the Registry on 21 January 2001.
Ms. Jovisevic, an attorney at law from Banja Luka in the Republika Srpska, will
take over Plavsic’s defence from Krstan Simic, who acted as temporary counsel
for the accused for a total of 21 days.

copies of all the documents that I have referred to and the latest updated status
of ongoing cases fact sheet for you after this.
QUESTIONS:
Asked whether
in the Simic and others case, the three accused on provisional release would
attend tomorrow’s status conference, Landale replied that they did not have
to come back to The Hague for the status conference. They would remain on
provisional release until they were notified that their trial was due to begin,
he concluded.
