With the start of the trial in the case of Vlastimir Ðorđevic yesterday, the Tribunal is at its busiest period of time with seven cases involving 21 accused being heard simultaneously. The proceedings are ongoing against 45 accused in 21 cases.
Meanwhile, the first judgement for the crimes committed by Serbian forces against Kosovo Albanians during the 1999 conflict in Kosovo has been scheduled to be rendered on Thursday, 26 February 2009 at 14:15 in Courtroom III. The case of Milutinović and others involves six senior political, military and police officials from Serbia and the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia accused of crimes in Kosovo.
Turning to issues of contempt of Tribunal, a Status Conference in the Hartmann case has been scheduled to take place this coming Friday, 30 January, at 2:15pm in Courtroom I.
Last Wednesday, 21 January, Trial Chamber II charged Vojislav Šešelj with contempt of court for knowingly and willfully disclosing information in knowing violation of an order granting protective measures in respect of three witnesses in his trial. The Registrar has been ordered to appoint an amicus curiae prosecutor to prosecute the charge set out in the Decision. The date at which Šešelj is to enter a plea to the charge has yet to be announced.
In the Tolimir case, a Status Conference has been scheduled for Friday, 27 February 2009, at 2:15pm in Courtroom I. The last Status Conference was on 31 October 2008.
On to this week’s court schedule:
Ðorđevic’s trial started yesterday with OTP’s opening statement. The first Prosecution witness commenced his testimony this morning.
In the Popović et al. case, the defence for Vinko Pandurević began yesterday with an opening statement by his counsel. Pandurević is the last accused to present his case for the defence.
The Lukić and Lukić case has adjourned for the remainder of the week. The Trial will resume on Tuesday, 3 February 2009, at 8:50 am in Courtroom I.
The trials of Vojislav Šešelj, Gotovina and others, Prlić and others and Momčilo Perišić will continue this week and next as scheduled.
