Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following
statement:


Good afternoon,


Firstly, I would like to note that it has been exactly a week
since the Tribunal issued a warrant of arrest and order for surrender
for Josip Jovic. The warrant for arrest states that the competent
Croatian authorities are directed and authorized to search for,
arrest, detain and surrender Mr. Jovic to the ICTY. It further
states that the Croatian authorities are to execute the warrant
promptly. Since last Wednesday, the Tribunal has had discussions
with the Croatian authorities urging that this matter be handled
expeditiously.


I would also like to be clear once again that the arrest warrant
and order for surrender were issued because of Mr. Jovic’s
failure to appear before the ICTY for his initial appearance. Refusing
to appear in court when ordered to do so is a serious offence at
the ICTY.


I would like to remind you that the opening of the trial of Mile
Mrksic, Miroslav Radic and Veselin Sljivancanin is scheduled for
this Tuesday, 11 October 2005, at 10 a.m. in Courtroom III with
the opening statement of the Prosecution. The Defence will also
be permitted to make an opening statement after the Prosecution
if it so wishes. The Prosecution is scheduled to commence the presentation
of its evidence on Tuesday 25 October. There will be a pre-trial
conference on Monday, 10 October.


I would like to draw your attention once again to the decisions
granting provisional release for Nebojsa Pavkovic and Sreten Lukic
issued on 30 September and 3 October respectively. I understand
that the Prosecutor has appealed Pavkovic’s provisional release
and copies of that document are available on request. I understand
that the Prosecution has not sought to appeal the decision regarding
Sreten Lukic.


I also wish to remind you again that the appeals hearing in The
Prosecutor v. Mladen Naletilic and Vinko Martinovic will
be held on Monday and Tuesday 17 and 18 October in Courtroom
II.


There will be a sentencing hearing in The Prosecutor v. Miroslav
Bralo on Monday 10 October starting at 9 a.m. in Courtroom
III. That will continue into the afternoon and is also scheduled
for the following afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m.


There will be a Defence pre-trial conference in the Krajisnik
case tomorrow at 9.30 a.m. in Courtroom II. The Defence case will
start on Monday 10 October.


The Milosevic trial is adjourned next week and will resume on
Tuesday 18 October.


In addition to the ongoing trials, in the next week status conferences
will be held in The Prosecutor v. Dragomir Milosevic next
Wednesday 12 October at 8 a.m. in Courtroom III; and in The
Prosecutor v. Blagoje Simic on Thursday 13 October at 2.15
p.m. in Courtroom III.


Finally, I am very pleased to welcome Ivana Ramic, the Spokesperson
for the Belgrade District Court, to the briefing. She is here for
a few days to familiarize herself first hand with the work of the
Tribunal.

statement.


Questions


Asked how he would qualify the co-operation received from the Croatian
authorities in the Jovic case, Landale answered that the warrant for arrest
and order for surrender had been issued one week ago. He added that the Tribunal
was now keen to move the process forward and therefore keen to see Mr. Jovic
transferred here so that he could undergo the procedure he had failed to appear
for, namely his initial appearance. Landale said that the Tribunal hoped that
this would happen in the coming days.
