ICTY Legacy Dialogues: Upcoming events

“From the Tribunal to the Classroom”

On 30 January 2017, the ICTY Outreach Programme, in co-operation with the European Association of History Teachers (Euroclio), will host a public discussion entitled From the Tribunal to the Classroom. The event is aimed at educational professionals dealing with the challenges of teaching recent, violent history and will discuss ways in which the Tribunal’s legacy can be utilised in educational settings. The public discussion will begin at 13:30 in The Hague's Museon and will feature two panel sessions.

During the first panel, history teachers from the former Yugoslavia will discuss how sensitive and difficult topics about the 1990s conflicts could be addressed in the classroom. The second panel will be dedicated to teaching the recent Yugoslav history in Dutch schools, centering on the crimes committed in Srebrenica and the role of Dutchbat. The second panel is organised and moderated by the Dutch NGO, PAX for Peace.

This public discussion is part of an in-depth multi-day workshop. The first two days (28 and 29 January) of the workshop will be held at the ICTY. During these two days, 30 history teachers/educational authors from the countries of the former Yugoslavia will discuss approaches and methodology for responsible history education. The discussion will utilise material available from the ICTY archives, along with the experience of the ICTY Outreach Programme in working with young people in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The workshop and the public event are jointly organised by the ICTY Outreach Programme and Euroclio.
