Journalists from the former Yugoslavia discuss transitional justice

Sarajevo |

A group of 22 journalists from across the former Yugoslavia visited the ICTY office in Sarajevo as part of a two-day training session on transitional justice reporting organised by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN).

The journalists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Kosovo engaged in a dynamic discussion with an ICTY representative, Mr Almir Alić, about initiating war crimes proceedings as part of transitional justice efforts and the important role of the Tribunal in this process.

Participants focused on the Tribunal’s jurisprudence in adjudicating wartime sexual violence and asked numerous questions about judgments and the enforcement of sentences in countries that have signed bilateral agreements with the ICTY. The journalists also commended the ICTY Outreach Programme’s valuable work with communities in the region.
