Former ICTY Judge Wang Tieya Dies Aged 89
The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia announces with deep sadness the death of Judge Wang Tieya (China). Judge Wang passed away on the afternoon of 12 January 2003 at the age of 89.
Judge Wang Tieya died in a hospital in Beijing, where he had spent almost 20 months.
Judge Wang Tieya was elected in 1997 as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; he resigned on 31 March 2000 for reasons of ill-health.
Judge Wang Tieya commenced his career as Professor of International Law at the National Wuhan University between 1940 and 1942, at the National Central University, Beijing, between 1942 and 1946 and Beijing University from 1946 to 1997. He was Chairman of the Political Science Department of Beijing University between 1947 and 1952, Head of the Section on International Law at the Faculty of Law at Beijing University between 1956 and 1983, Director of the International Law Institute of Beijing University between 1983 and 1985. He was also a visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School, New York between 1980 and 1989. He was a visiting Professor to The Hague Academy of International Law in 1984, at the School of Law of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in 1988, and the School of Law of the University of California in Los Angeles in 1989. He was also Legal Advisor to the Chinese Delegation to the United Nations in 1950 and the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, Geneva and New York in 1979.
Upon learning of the death of Judge Wang Tieya, the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, Judge Claude Jorda, expressed his "great sadness at the loss of a distinguished colleague who will be remembered as a learned lawyer and a wise Judge. He was also a dedicated colleague and a gentle man who brought to the bench his great experience in the field of international law".
The funeral of Judge Wang Tieya will take place in Beijing on 17 January 2003.
