Beqë Beqaj Indicted for Contempt of the Tribunal:
The initial appearance of the accused will take place early next week
During his initial appearance hearing, Beqë Beqaj will be asked to enter a plea on the charges of “contempt, attempted contempt and incitement to contempt of the Tribunal” brought against him.
Beqë Beqaj was indicted on 21 October by the ICTY Prosecutor, Carla Del Ponte. Confirmed on 29 October by Judge Agius, this indictment was kept under seal until the arrest of the accused by UNMIK and his subsequent transfer to the custody of the Tribunal.
The Indictment alleges that Beqë Beqaj is a relative of Isak Musliu, an accused currently in the Tribunal’s custody who is scheduled to go on trial on Monday 15 November alongside with Fatmir Limaj and Haradin Bala (Limaj & al. case; see press releases 729, 730, 733, 736 and 738).
The Indictment against Beqë Beqaj states that “From on or about 17 February 2003 through to on or about 19 October 2004, Beqë Beqaj individually and in concert with others (…), knowingly and willfully interfered with the administration of justice by threatening, intimidating, offering a bribe to or otherwise interfered with witnesses or potential witnesses…” in the Limaj & al. case.
More specifically, the indictment details the accused’s dealings with two potential witnesses.
