Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

Later today, the President of the ICTY Judge Theodor Meron will present the Tribunal’s bi-annual completion strategy report to the UN Security Council. The President will also take this opportunity to brief the Security Council on the progress made by the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, of which he is also President. His address will be followed by that of the Tribunal’s Prosecutor, Serge Brammertz. The President and Prosecutor are scheduled to speak at 10:00 am in New York, which is 4:00 pm in The Hague. Their addresses will be sent to the media and posted online shortly after the delivery of the speeches.

Ahead of the launch of the Hague-branch of the Mechanism on 1 July 2013, the Tribunal’s regional liaison offices in Belgrade and Sarajevo are hosting workshops to explain the Mechanism’s mandate to legal professionals and NGO partners. The workshops cover the completion strategy of the ICTY and the Mechanism’s role in that process. The aim is to facilitate continued cooperation between NGOs, legal professionals, the ICTY, and the Mechanism. 

Onto the activities in the courtrooms, hearings in the trials of Ratko Mladić, Goran Hadžić and Radovan Karadžić continue this week and next as scheduled:

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Neđo Nikolić, former director of the brick factory in Bratunac, who is testifying about the Srebrenica events. He is the 147th witness to be called by the Defence. 

In the case of Ratko Mladić, Zoran Malinić, former officer in the Main Staff of the Republika Srpska Army, is currently testifying about the Srebrenica events. He is the 105th witness to be called by the Prosecution. The witness is testifying with facial distortion.

In the case of Goran Hadžić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of witness GH-026, who is testifying in closed session. He is the 52nd Prosecution witness in court so far.

Finally, on a scheduling issue, a status conference in the case of Vlastimir Đorđević will be held on 17 July 2013 at 3p.m. in Courtroom 2.
