Registry and Chambers:
Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
Good afternoon,
This Monday 23 September, the Trial Chamber in the case of Goran Hadžić, former President of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, began a five-day site visit to locations relevant to the indictment in eastern Croatia. The purpose of the visit is to obtain a first-hand impression of those sites, including the topography of the relevant areas. The visiting delegation consists of the Trial Chamber Judges, support staff, and representatives of both the Prosecution and Defence. The trial will continue on Monday, 7 October.
In the Popović et al. case, the defence for Drago Nikolić has filed a motion according to Rule 115 of the Rules seeking the admission of additional evidence. The Defence for Nikolić states that prosecution witness PW-101 has recently retracted aspects of his previous testimony, claiming during prosecution proofing for the trial of Ratko Mladić on July 30, that he did not see Drago Nikolić at the killing site in Orahovac during the events in Srebrenica. The Defence argue that this new evidence was not available during the trial and therefore meets the criteria to be admitted. Further to this, they argue that the evidence is relevant, credible and demonstrates that Nikolić’s conviction is unsafe. Witness PW-101 is a former member of the Zvornik Brigade of the VRS and he testified as a Prosecution witness in Popović et al. trial in February 2007.
The trial of Radovan Karadžić previously scheduled to restart on Monday, 28 October, is now scheduled to resume on Tuesday, 29 October.
The trial of Ratko Mladić is scheduled for this week and next. The witness today is RM-016, who is testifying in closed session. The Prosecution has so far called 143 witnesses in this trial.
Finally, a reminder that this Sunday, 29 September, the ICTY will be opening its doors to the public as part of the sixth annual ‘International Day’ organised by the Municipality of The Hague. Media are welcome to cover the ICTY’s Open Day from 11.15 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in the lobby of the Tribunal and are invited to film the welcoming remarks, as well as visitors enjoying a courtroom tour and presentations. Media wishing to attend should send an email to the Media Office by this Friday, 27 September.
