FEDERAL MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF GERMANY HAS VISITED THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA


Today, Thursday 6 March 1997, the Federal Minister of Justice of Germany, Professor Dr. Edzard Schmidt-Jortzig, paid an official visit to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The Minister, who was accompanied by the German Ambassador to the Netherlands, His Excellency Mr. Eberhard von Puttkamer, and senior officials of the Ministry of Justice, visited the
courtroom and held talks with the President of the Tribunal, Judge Antonio Cassese.


Judge Cassese thanked the Minister for his visit, which bears witness to the strong support of Germany for the Tribunal. In addition President Cassese provided Minister Schmidt-Jortzig with a brief update on the recent activities of the Tribunal.


In their meeting, Minister Schmidt-Jortzig and President Cassese discussed, among other topics, the possible secondment of Prosecutors and Investigating Judges to the Tribunal as well as the action being taken by Germany at the level of Länder with a view to finalising the Agreement between the Tribunal and Germany on the enforcement in Germany of sentences handed down by
the Tribunal.


Finally, Professor Dr. Schmidt-Jortzig reiterated Germany's commitment both to strongly supporting the actions of the Tribunal and to lending it its full co-operation in the future.
