The Hague, 8 June 2007

The Trial Chamber will render its judgement for Milan Martić on Tuesday, 12 June at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom I.

Martić was a political leader in the so-called “Serbian District of Krajina” and later “Republic Serbian Krajina” from 1991 until 1995, occupying positions of Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence and the President. He is charged with the deportation or forcible transfer of tens of thousands of Croat, Muslim and other non-Serbs from about one third of the territory of Croatia
and parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the goal was of making them part of a new Serb-dominated state through the commission of crimes.

In order to carry out the plan for a Serb dominated state, the indictment alleges that Martić created, financed and commanded special police forces such as “Martić's Police”, the Territorial Defence and the Serbian State Security Service and imposed restrictive and discriminatory measures against the population, such as restriction of movement, removal from positions of authority
in local government institutions and the police, dismissal from jobs and arbitrary searches of their homes.

According to the indictment, Martić is also charged with the extermination or murder of hundreds of Croat, Muslim and other non-Serb civilians, including women and elderly persons, in north-eastern Croatia and north-western Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition, he is also charged with the unlawful attacks on Zagreb and undefended Croat and Muslim villages and for the prolonged
imprisonment of hundreds of civilians in detention facilities where repeated torture, beatings, sexual assaults and killings took place.

The initial indictment for Martić was confirmed on 25 July 1995 and he was transferred to the Tribunal in May 2002. The trial commenced on 13 December 2005 and concluded with closing arguments on 12 January 2007.
