The Hague, 2 July 2007

The first of eight students from Serbia began work today as an intern at the Tribunal. Sponsored by the Belgrade-based NGO Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR), the eight Serbian students will serve internships lasting from three to six months at the seat of the Tribunal in The Hague . Following this, they will serve an additional two-month internship at the War Crimes
Chamber or War Crimes Prosecution Office in the Serbian capital, Belgrade .

The Tribunal is particularly pleased to support YIHR's War Crimes Law Internship Programme because it is the first where interns will gain practical experience at both the Tribunal and the Belgrade judicial organs dealing with war crimes. Thus, the War Crimes Law Internship Programme creates an opportunity for the Tribunal to contribute directly to building the capacity of
new generations in Serbia to try war crimes cases.

YIHR's War Crimes Law Internship Programme is supported by the Swiss Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ICTY's Outreach Office, the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office and the War Crimes Chamber in Belgrade cooperated with YIHR in developing and implementing the programme.
