A group of 12 students from the University of Denver, USA, visited the ICTY Sarajevo field office in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on 13 June as part of their study trip to the region. The aim of the visit was to learn first-hand about the work and achievements of the ICTY, as well as its role in the post-conflict recovery of the region of the former Yugoslavia.
The ICTY representative in BiH, Almir Alić, introduced the guests to trials concerning war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide held before the Tribunal. He further talked about the Tribunal’s legacy and its contribution to strengthening the rule of law in the former Yugoslavia. Following the presentations, the students had numerous questions, including about the experiences of victims during their testimonies before the Tribunal and their motivation to testify. Mr Alić explained that, among other motivations, many ICTY witnesses want to testify upon behalf of all of those who did not have the opportunity to speak out about crimes they have suffered.
The group leader, Professor Ann Petrel, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity given to her students to further their understanding of the legacy of the Tribunal and its contribution to the ongoing processes of facing the past and reconciliation in the region.
