Post-Conflict Research Centre interns pay visit to ICTY Field Office in Sarajevo

Sarajevo |

As part of its mission to cultivate an environment for sustainable peace and foster inter-ethnic relations in the former Yugoslavia, the Post-Conflict Research Centre (PCRC) from Sarajevo provides training for interns from around the globe. In an effort to provide them with insights into the complexities of transitional justice processes, the Centre regularly introduces interns to the work of local and international organisations active in the field.

A group of post-graduate students from Slovenia, Turkey, Colombia, Denmark and the US recently visited the ICTY office in Sarajevo to hear from the ICTY Registry Liaison Officer, Mr Almir Alić, about the Tribunal’s work and its rich jurisprudence. The PCRC interns were very keen to learn more about the Outreach Programme’s work with communities in the former Yugoslavia, particularly in combating a culture of denial.

A 23-year old US student, Cassandra Roulund, shared her impression after the two-hour presentation: “Very important information was presented and I am looking forward to sharing what I learned, as well as using the many available resources to find out more about the Tribunal’s work. I was particularly interested in the fact that there are real issues regarding acceptance and denial of what happened during the war among the people of former Yugoslavia and in the way that the Tribunal is addressing this issue by stressing the individual responsibility of individuals.”
